I don't know if I checked for the, "check inside this book," option or if that's even available anymore, but I wish it was and I should have. I wasn't too impressed with this. While it is very colorful, the writing is very simplistic and the translation isn't all that great, well, I guess it was but the material just wasn't that original to begin with. I don't feel it gave any history or help, just a basic, "we celebrate our ancestors, we put up an altar, and a couple other things." There you have it, other than the illustrations, that's pretty much the book, oh, and written in Spanish too...
Wonderful book. Beautifully illustrated and provided a good understanding of El Dia De Los Muertos for kids. I did a presentation for my granddaughter's second grade class and read this book, as well as talking a bit about the celebration and showing pictures I took in Oaxaca. They loved it! I actually bought two of these books so I could donated one to her classroom.
Cute book. Purchased to accompany my unit on Day of Dead celebration, it was very informative.
This book is very appealing to the eye and shares child-friendly insight on the day of the dead.
I have to preface this review with the fact that I did NOT buy this book for the story. The story is pretty basic and simple with both a Spanish and English text on every page describing the dia de los muertos traditions. I'm not rating for the story though. I am an art teacher and saw a lesson plan involving this book online so I purchased it to give the lesson a try. It was a huge success and I am so happy to have the illustrations from this book to use. They are gorgeous and colorful!
My kids love having me read to them and this is one of their favorites. Like probably too many native Spanish speakers my kids don’t speak or read Spanish. They really like hearing me read to them in Spanish and frequently ask for this book. It’s colorful and short enough for bedtime. Also easy for them to follow.
