From the beginning of this true-life account of "the bloody crimes and execution of the Texas Black Widow," we already know the outcome. We know she kills two husbands, is convicted of the crimes, and is executed--the second woman in Texas to be executed since the Civil War.But much of the narrative of Buried Memories : The Bloody Crimes and Execution of the Texas Black Widow simply chronicles the life of Betty Lou Dunevant Beets, complete with snippets of her childhood experiences and the numerous marriages (five), along with the birth of six children. Most of the children were parceled off to various relatives or their fathers, while Betty pursued her next man and her next financial gain. Acquiring property, even something simple like a trailer, became an obsession--and would be among other listed motives for the murders, despite her protests that she was a battered wife.Probably the most heinous aspect to this woman's crimes, aside from the sheer coldblooded nature of the acts, was how she used her children as accomplices.Even when she was finally arrested and her trial began, and even after her conviction, it was fifteen years before she was finally executed. And during that time, there were many appeals and efforts to overturn the conviction. What forces combined to create such a monster hidden behind the sweet, demure and often sociable veneer this woman presented? And how could she fool so many men into marrying her? Even her supporters, including those children she used, would have to admit that she often, in a split second, could turn cold and evil. Was it simply a matter of the sociopathic charms that killers often hide behind? I did find myself fascinated by the story, but even as I searched for clues along the way, there were few to show us how she came to be the way she was.In some ways, the story was just a lot of factual information gleaned from various sources and nothing speculative that would tell us why. Perhaps there are no answers. I found the story captivating, but also like reading newspaper or magazine accounts. I would have enjoyed a more exploratory venture. Therefore, I'm giving this one three stars.
I read this book when it came out in 2001 and just reread it on Kindle. I attended her trial and it was a eye opener to the shady side of life. One error is the Henderson County Courthouse is brown brick --not red. Betty didn't live down from the Hutchins State Jail because it wasn't built until the 1990s. This is a well written book definitely worth reading.
I have to say, this is one of the best true crime books I have ever read, and I have read quite few. It captures you from the very beginning and doesn't let go until the end. I agree with another poster on here about what a good writer Irene Pence is. I've always been a fan of Ann Rule too, but, some of her books have had portions where she goes on and on about technical, behind the scenes things until I'm turning pages and skipping forward and I'm not one to usually do that. I read every word of this book and was sorry to come to the end. Betty Beets was that sociopathic kind of person we all hope we'll never meet. Absolutely chilling. Someone else commented that it wasn't just her parasitic relationships with men that was so disturbing but her relationship with her children and I couldn't agree more. It's bad enough that she manipulated her children into helping her cover up her murders, but once she was caught, she had no problem trying to divert the blame to them (and possibly executed) in hopes of freeing herself. She really was a completely soulless person.
it was a well written book, this is the first book that i have read by her. probably will be reading more. it,s another hard to the core and cold hearted woman. hard to believe betty beets can tell here own children that she is going to kill her husbands, do it and then ask for there help in burying them.the worst one is jimmy beets dug his own gravesite. then it takes quite awhile for her to finally get arrested. the worst part is it took many many years in the court system again trying to safe this woman from death. when will the court system finally realize how much money they waste on a person who is trying to get away with murder?
Very engaging and so hard to believe this woman was real life. Never heard of anyone so utterly brazen, and devoid of guilt -- just routine to advance her own plans and desires. Wow. It was also worthwhile to see what this carnage did to her own family (whom she claims to love), and that she was so utterly pathological as to feel simply entitled to engage them in her crimes (over their protests), and leave them as legal accessories to her crimes. Pathological detachment disorder in action . . . right "next door". Heads up!
Book came in excellent condition and is one of the best I have read about Betty Lou Beets. I live in the area & knew a lot of the details of the crimes, and Ms.Pence filled in a few things I didn't know. Very well researched and written. An easy read with lots of information
This was a very detailed and informative book that captivated me from page one. The research for this true story must have taken much time for the author to do because all sides of the story was told with so much detail.
Oh my god, what an evil woman. There was a big deal when she was executed here in Texas but she deserves execution as much as any man. People claimed she was abused. What a load of crap. They obviously don't know much about this serial black widow. This is a good book. It's not long and it places Betty in her place and context and describes her crimes very well. This woman intimidated her children into helping cover up her evil deeds. She's despicable. Good riddance.Recommended for true crime lovers.
