This is not only for children. This Picture Bible by Iva Hoth is my 3rd copy! The first was paperback and finally wore out with use. I was in my 20s when I received it and I loved the format- graphic novel- but it is 900 pages! Restore that childlike faith again. The stories are Biblically accurate and thorough. Now with my children, they each have one, loving them from age 5 and up. We introduced the O.T. at age 6 1/2 when understanding is greater. We read this cover to cover and then start again. One 3-4 page story a night. Highly recommended. I LOVE reading this to my kids and I bet I know more Bible stories, names and correlations then most adults! But you do still have to read your scriptures of course, but to be able to see the big picture in full color is awesome.
I Love This Picture Bible!!I am 64 years old, and maybe the oldest kid of all !! Years ago, I bought these Bibles; one for my own children, some as gifts for other children, and also for other families with children. In one family the dad, who did not like to read at all, read this through and loved it. It is a great way to introduce the Bible to those who might think the Bible is boring or hard to understand. What is really nice is that you can get a quick, Big picture of the main stories throughout the entire Bible. You don't get slowed down with lots of details. You get the main stories with their lessons quickly; and then compiled one upon another, so that reading this becomes a "shot in the arm", or a therapeutic dose of God's Word. It is a Great way to get the Full, Big Picture quickly before going into a much slower detailed, and completely accurate study of God's Word.I just spent the last 3 weeks reading through this Picture Bible yet again. It did for me exactly what it did for me the first time I read it; when I read it over 30 years ago. It built my Faith in God very strong!! It reminded me of the extreme importance of our obedience to God. It reminded me of the very harmful consequences of sin and disobeying God!! It reminded me of God's Goodness, Forgiveness, Grace, & Mercy!! It made me think about how we cannot ever afford to compromise, but rather give God our Very Best; and to do all things by Faith in God. It reminded me that God alone is my BEST Strength and Help!! It rekindled a "Fire" in my heart. I am now purchasing these Bibles again to share with more children; hoping that the Picture Bibles will also fall into the hands of more adults who will read them :) Shalom Blessings!!
I am finally writing a review now on this, but honestly, I have been using this book for over thirty years now. I started with a Picture Bible that was in three sections, which I cannot find anymore, and read them constantly growing up. It really helped me as a young person to visually the stories of the Bibles and I still prefer the art in here over the art in other modern picture Bibles. Not everything is 100% accurate, but it is close enough that it is a great learning tool for young people (or old people if you still like comics).I especially like that it breaks down into individual stories, prefaced by a Scripture heading for each. I recommended this to another minister that I mentor and she is now using one lesson at a time with kids in her study. I keep buying more of these because I keep giving them away to others, but I always want to have one for my children as they grow as well.
I bought this for myself since I had one as a kid. I learned a lot from it. The author has a few parts where he portrays things as he thinks they happened, but for the most part this is accurate. The pictures aren't the best quality but to me it makes it seem like an old time comic book. I also lent this out to a child (he is about 9 years old) and he really liked it, and then he suggested it to another boy who lent it, and then an other, and so on...
I had this as a kid. I would spend hours reading/looking at the pictures, which is why I bought it for my toddler son. He's 2.It has some really good points to it. The New Testament isn't quite as well done as the Old Testament, in my opinion. It's not as exhaustive; Jesus looks a bit stereotypical. But the Old Testament is outstanding!It is really detailed. You will be hard pressed to find a children's Bible with a higher picture-to-word ratio, or one that includes so much of the Bible. It doesn't skip stuff in the interest of moving the story along -- you get a real sense of the pace of the real Bible. It doesn't skip the prophets or Paul's journeys -- a lot of kid's Bibles skip from Daniel to Jesus and from Jesus to Revelation. It also doesn't skip some of the more mature stories, like the witch of Endor or David and Bathsheba, or water down the violence. It isn't gross or provocative about this stuff, but it's in there. Some people might see that as a drawback, but I think it's a good thing. The Bible is supposed to be a little shocking!
Great comic book Bible, not dark like some. I had an earlier version when I was younger, which was read until it fell completely apart. I hunted for just this one, and because I couldn't see the inside pages, I took a risk and ordered it. It is great, and my kids, who are older than the recommended ages, still like it and read it right away. They are very advanced readers, so it is great and pleased me that this Bible maintained their interest even after it took me so long to find one.
