The book first presents instructions and photos that show the process of creating a particular surface, then provides a separate project for each effect. The instructions are thorough, and many of these processes are painstaking, involving up to a dozen steps or more. But the end results dazzle, such as the pewter wine stoppers, which look both colonial and new due to clever design, or the cork switch plate, an amusing and relatively easy home accent. Other projects are candlesticks, jewelry, picture frames and similar small items. The book ends with an inspiring gallery of work in polymer crafted by the artists who have shared their techniques and designs with Dean. However, this is not a book for beginners. All of the techniques require an excellent knowledge of working with polymer clay, as well as a budget that can afford purchasing specific tools and materials, such as a pasta machine. This is a fantastic book with great techniques for faux stone, wood, metal, leather, bone, even dichroic glass . The projects are unusual, focusing on non-jewelry applications like jars, masks, frames, drawer pulls and other decorative and useful objects. Highly recommended!
I'm brand-new to the wonders of polymer clay and I found this book to be really easy to follow. I've spent a lot of time looking at projects and ideas online, and I was happy to discover that this book covered a lot of things I haven't seen already. I made the agate slices from this book and they turned out amazingly realistic looking! VERY cool stuff in here, and every project has great instructions that anybody should be able to follow and get great results. (You will need a pasta roller for most of the projects.)
This book Is not what I expected to be. Instructions are not very clear.
The book showed up quickly and in good condition, and after reading half of it I was too excited to read any more because I wanted to get a start on the cool projects it has in it! I am a polymer clay artist with five years making and selling my own sculptures, and I found that (as someone who has not experimented much with creating different surface effects with my clay) I could learn a lot from this book.
I can't recommend this book enough!! It's AMAZING!! The way Irene is able to imitate precious metals and gemstones astounds me! The instructions are detailed and easy enough for a beginner to try out. I would say this is a good book for a noob to start with and a fun book for the most experienced PC artist. The faux stones and metals look very much like the real thing!=oD

Really basic and not much instruction, there seem to be steps missing or inaccurate descriptions.
