This is an incredible and important book. I love Shorto's writing (Descartes's Bones, The Island at the Center of the World, Amsterdam) and this is no exception. It's the kind of in-depth, thought-provoking, and thoroughly entertaining book I expect from this author. Chapter 4 blew my mind -- I was aware already of the profound influence of Greece on early Christianity, but I'd never considered how much of an effect it had on Judaism after the destruction of the temple and the coming of the diaspora.Whether one is an atheist, a Jew, a Christian, a Muslim, or of no denomination, this work is profound and meaningful.
I found this book very insightful and spiritually uplifting. Someone else might call it blasphemy. (Prier to reading this book, I read, The Truth about Jesus : Is He a Myth? by M. M. Mangasarian C. 1909, Project Gutenberg. The purpose of this other was to disprove the existence of Jesus, or at least to discrete Jesus. I'd call this book blasphemy.) The Gospel Truth does not, in my opinion diminish Jesus in any way. Instead, it illuminates and enlarges one's understanding of what Jesus said and did, and what he didn't say or do, and it illuminates time period of Jesus and of the early Christians. I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking a more from their faith or struggling with what faith is. On the other hand, it is not for everyone.
Outstanding summary of the current work on the historical Jesus. Wipes away millennia of folderol, concisely and very clearly. Exceptionally well-written and quite intelligent.
A fine read for anyone with an open mind. Shorty is a good writer and a good researcher, even-handed on what for some would be a sensitive subject. Recommended!
As an ex-seminarian, I wish that this book had been available to me. A lot of things I struggled with were clarified.
Shorto toggles between belief and unbelief in this work on the historical Jesus. Much prominence is given to the Jesus Seminar, but more orthodox theologians also make an appearance. All-in-all a superbly written, thought-provoking book. I also recommend his book on the Dutch founding of Manhattan, The Island at the Center of the World.
Historical truth is often hard to find, especially if the topic under investigation is 2000 years in the past. Mr Shorto does an excellent job of sifting through a mountain of information to come to conclusions that make one question common interpretation of events in Jesus' life and times. This is a great read for anyone interested in history and who wants to explore his/her faith in the context of historical facts, as best as they can be discerned.
This is a foundation-book for me. It is in my permanent book collection. I have studied the NT for decades and this is the first time I've found that someone has laid out the known and interpreted facts about Jesus to make sense to me. I wanted to know more about the known facts regarding the early life of Jesus and this book lays that out plus much more. The author gives alternative points of view which I really appreciate knowing so I can make up my own mind on the controversial issues. If you have an inquisitive mind about the life of Jesus, I strongly recommend you read this book. I felt so strongly about the content of this book that I started with the Kindle version and then bought the print version so I could share it easier with my friends.
