This is an amazing Hebrew Bible. I am a self-taught beginner student of Biblical Hebrew and this is my first reading Hebrew text. At $35, I was expecting an book of ordinary quality. But this item is packed with premium features that rival expensive bibles published by Cambridge and other publishers in this competitive billion-dollar industry.1 The Cover: the book came with a brown imitation leather cover. I had owned expensive bibles with real animal-skin covers before. And I can attest that this imitation leather feels as good as a real calf-skinned Cambridge's cover. It's soft and feel nice in my hand; it's a joy to hold. The cover is stitched along the edge which enables it to be opened flat no matter what page you are at. A bible with an open-flat feature is rare at $35, and this volume has a feel that rivals bibles 3 times its price. The imitated-leather cover will not last as long as real one. But what can I complain? I was expecting a medium-priced study text and this one already looks and feels like a premium product. 2. The Paper: the paper seems to be ordinary bible paper which is thin but not so much as to result in ghosting. The text is reproduced clearly. There isn't much space to write anything down. But the bottom area of each page is presented with vocabulary lexicon. It's a spacious area where you can put post-it notes over to write your own notes if you want.3. Text: With about 1600 pages of texts for the Hebrew Bible, the text size is reasonably big. The texts are not too jumbled together and the lines and spacing are quite pleasant. I don't have any problem reading the Nikkud dot vowels. One caveat would be that specific names appearing with low frequency are marked as grey. For some, this may interfere with the aesthetics of the overall presentation of the Hebrew text. But remember: this is a reader's text for students. The grey words are meant to help students read faster without being bogged down by rare names. In summary, this is a really solid product. It surprised me out of the box. I had to go check online to see how much did I actually pay for it. It surpasses its price tag, and is now one of the nicest looking, nicest feel bibles I own.
This edition is well done by A. Philip Brown II and Bryan W. Smith. For any reader who is fluent in Hebrew, or just beginning, I highly recommend it. It is easy on the eyes, and the text is of nice size. It does not have an English parallel, but contains a glossary in the back and heavily footnoted on every page for words used less than 100 times which are not proper nouns. It also contains glossing for proper nouns used less than 100 times. There are many more bells and whistles to this beautiful edition of the Hebrew Text. There is also a Greek edition (Richard J. Goodrich and Albert L. Lukaszewski) of the NT, A Readers Greek New Testament. Both of these volumes are done in separate editions, but after purchasing my copy of each I learned that Zondervan does have a one volume copy containing both editions. The imitation leather cover is of standard quality, and I was not disappointed. I have since purchased another as a gift for a friend.
This was recommended to me by a pastor who learned about it in his master's program. It took me about a year to read through it. I forced myself not to look at English translations unless if was hopeless otherwise, so sometimes I didn't even know what Isaiah or the Psalms just said. But my vocabulary grew enormously. This Tenach was a great help in advancing my Hebrew reading.
When I first thought of ordering this book, my primary concern was whether the font size would be large enough to be clearly readable. I am happy to report that the font size is indeed large enough. If you compare the font size to Times New Roman, the text is equivalent to a 12 point font with a 1.5 line spacing. The 1.5 line spacing gives sufficient room for the Hebrew vowel points. I find the text to be clear and easy to read. In addition the paper and binding seem sufficiently heavy and robust. The words that are set in gray are also easy to read.I also like the very substantial cowhide cover, which has a nice texture and smell that conjure pleasant childhood memories of baseball gloves and leather shop. The glossary at the back of the book (for the most frequently occurring Hebrew words), however, is somewhat difficult to use. Being a Hebrew text, the book is (of course) printed so that the first page occurs to the far right of the book, with the other pages following in sequence towards the left of the book. For the index as well, the first letters of Hebrew alphabet start on the rightmost page of the index. Each page of the index is arranged in two columns. On the first page of the index, however, words beginning with the letter "Aleph" start on the leftmost column. In every page of the index the first column is on the left, just as it would be in an English textbook or dictionary. It would seem to me that this first column should be positioned on the right hand side of the page instead of on the left hand side of the page, in order to be consistent with the fact that Hebrew text and pages run from right to left. When two pages of the index are open before you, your eye should be able to easily follow the alphabetical listing of Hebrew words by running over the four columns by consistently looking from the right to the left--from one column to the next.
I bought this for a friend who is learning Hebrew. She loves it and tells me how amazing and helpful it is. My pastor recommended it for her to start learning with. I have a Greek bible that is very similar and it's great for beginners.
Very nice! Makes reading much easier with infrequent words glossed/parsed in the footer. I would give this 5 stars if it included the critical apparatus as well, but other than that I enjoy it very much.
