About the Author
Marsha M. Linehan, PhD, ABPP, the developer of dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), is Professor of Psychology and of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences and Director of the Behavioral Research and Therapy Clinics at the University of Washington. Her primary research interest is in the development and evaluation of evidence-based treatments for populations with high suicide risk and multiple, severe mental disorders. Dr. Linehan's contributions to suicide research and clinical psychology research have been recognized with numerous awards, including the 2017 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Psychology and the 2016 Career/Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies. She is also a recipient of the Gold Medal Award for Life Achievement in the Application of Psychology from the American Psychological Foundation and the James McKeen Cattell Award from the Association for Psychological Science. In her honor, the American Association of Suicidology created the Marsha Linehan Award for Outstanding Research in the Treatment of Suicidal Behavior. She is a Zen master and teaches mindfulness and contemplative practices via workshops and retreats for health care providers.

As a therapist for the past 22 years, and the owner of over 500 books relating to the profession, I can easily say this is one of the most valuable books in my library. I've used it numerous times in the last 6 weeks since I ordered it, and not just for clients with Borderline Personality Disorder. If you are the owner of Linehan's original Skills Training Manual (1993) and found it not terribly user-friendly, you will be pleasantly surprised at how attractive, clear and useful the new handouts and worksheets are.ONE BIG CAVEAT, however - the book's listing says that both handouts and worksheets are downloadable - a large reason why I bought the book. However, this is not true; I was only able to download the worksheets, and despite a number of emails with Guilford, who did seem to be trying to be helpful, I was unable to resolve this problem. They do claim that if you buy the textbook DBT® Skills Training Manual, Second Edition, you can download the handouts as well from the website listed in that book. If I had known that, I would have bought the textbook, even for the higher price. It is a pain to have to singly photocopy the handouts that I wish to share with a client...
This book is a counterfeit edition, which I confirmed with the Guilford Publications, Inc. and Marsha Linehan's staff. I am being advised to let other potential buyers know. There are gross grammatical errors, misspelled words, and missing words. I cannot even copy handouts for clients.
The book appears to be not sold by the publisher, it's likely counterfeit. There are many odd typos, words, and entire paragraphs missing from the print copy.
I thought this was a complete book of both handouts and worksheets but from what I see it is just worksheets which can be confusing if you are doing it on your own. I now might have to buy the Teachers Edition.
Marsha Linehan has done an amazing job at developing a DBT program at will help build coping skills to be able to manage emotions, chronic illness, anxiety, depression, ptsd and so much more. I went through this entire program and it changed my life, and now I am in school to be certified therapist and then will work toward my certification in this program. I highly recommend this for anyone who is suffering anxiety, depression, ptsd, chronic pain, mental illness, PTSD, grief and more. In fact I think these skills should be taught in high schools.
My clients love these worksheets and this format makes it easy to photocopy them to give as therapy homework. I would suggest it for therapy clients to as a way to keep all your therapy homework organized. If you are a practitioner, I would recommend buying the book that accompanies this manual to better understand the instructions and what each worksheet is for. Some are self-explanatory but others are confusing without context.
Helps you examine all parts of your life while giving easy homeworks to regularly practice. Gives you mental and behavioral skills to use in difficult moments. Especially good for anyone who struggles with intense emotions whether disordered or just via natural personality. You can be entirely self-motivated to go through the book, but it's best to have someone hold you accountable for practicing. I also bought the manual which describes skills in more depth with examples, which is especially good if you don't want to go through a DBT program.
As a patient diagnosed with C-PTSD, and experienced with the DBT behavior modification therapy treatment, these worksheets are extremely important and incredibly effective if used consistently toward the goal of healing deep traumatic experiences and the myriad of complex ways the experience(s) manifest suffering in every way, every day.The best approach, in my experience, is to make a copy of any worksheet selected from the book, and just free-form write down answers to the questions, without thinking about it. Getting the words down on paper is part of the healing process. The goal is to awaken yourself from the denial and avoidance behaviors that keep the traumas alive in the mind's subconscious. Initially, these behaviors were superior defense mechanisms that enabled the victim to cope, but until the traumatic experiences are faced here in the present, the victim continues to believe the past is the present. Using these DBT worksheets help reveal how often and consistently we use destructive behavior, not realizing how or when or why is causing such suffering long after the experience ended.The worksheets address each of the 4 primary DBT skills, using a variety of techniques that help face buried fears without triggering stress, fear, panic and sabotaging behaviors.
