I don't believe I had seen a publishing date prior to receiving this book. The year was 2000. I suppose some of those old reviews should have been a clue. As such, it's hard to be certain what, if anything, is still valid.What is here, though, is well written and presented in a logical manner. I especially like the author's nicely detailed maps and descriptions of added sights.I'll use this book but I'll be sure to verify everything beforehand.
There are no indications of elevation gain. Not useful.
I have been using this book to plan a backpacking trip to Washington in August. In particular I have examined 2 hikes one of which is the North Cascades Loop. The information is good with adequate information to plan as well as information on where to obtain detailed maps.
Doug Lorain has done a wonderful job with this book. I've hiked extensively throughout Washington, and still found this book inspirational. All of the trips described in the book are lengthy backpacking trips. A wonderful job was done linking trails together, providing great, detailed, honest assessments of the route/terrain/difficulty of each trip. Best of all, the book is a joy to read (high praise for a guidebook). Even when not planning a trip, you'll enjoy thumbing through it, dreaming of future trips. A must have for anyone who wants to plan a great backpacking trip in Washington - period.
