Everyone knows about C&P; and if you don't, I'm rather surprised you're considering a Norton Critical Edition (regardless, I write this review about the content of this particular edition, and not about how wonderful Dostoevksy is). As usual, the folks at Norton have the best criticism following the text of the novel. From the great writer Tolstoy himself to the brilliant critic Bakhtin, the great literary scholars from all interpretive standpoints offer thoughtful history and criticism of the text. Furthermore, primary documents, including USSR treatises on the teaching of the novel, are also included. For those interested in delving beyond the text of Dostoevsky, Norton has succeeded once again in assembling a powerful lineup of scholarship to accompany a truly great novel.
First, Crime and Punishment is one of the finest novels ever written in any language (in my humble opinion). Having read it several times, I can be sure of finding new insights when I pick it up next. Dostoevsky understands human nature, the inner-workings of the human mind and the need for something which transcends - all of which are portrayed in agonizing beauty in the novel.Some translations of Russian literature are simply painful. But most folks will find this translation very accessible, the only trouble being the odd name combinations for some characters. There are some good character name cheat-sheets out there, and I would recommend printing one out before diving into the novel. But don't let the names throw you; this novel is well worth the effort of the reading.
I don't speak Russian and hence cannot comment on the translation's accuracy. However, the Coulson translation seems much clearer than the Garnett translation: no Victorian euphemisms, more realistic depiction of Raskolnikov's unfamiliar psychology.The supplementary background, sources and essays are superb. I'm reading Dostoevsky's works chronologically along with Joseph Frank's five-volume biography. Frank's biography is an epiphany, as is his exigesis of Crime and Punishment Still, practically each of the essays in the Norton edition opens a new provocative perspective about Crime and Punishment and Dostoevsky's goals and impact. Particularly remarkable: Nobel Prize-winning Czech author Czeslaw Milosz's essay on similarities and differences between 1860s Russian and middle twentieth-century Western intelligentsia - Jean-Paul Sartre as a modern Raskolnikov! Also essays about Soviet suppression of Dostoevsky's works and one by Alberto Moravia about the conflict between Marx's and Dostoevsky's outlooks. Also, Tolstoy's 1890 comment about how Raskolnikov's strange consciousness developed - this written more than 20 years after Crime and Punishment was published: Dostoevsky made a lasting impression!
Spoiler alert, I think there's a gun in the 3rd act.
I am not going to presume to review this great classic work, except to say that my teenage son needed some more serious works to read for school and found that this was his favorite. We originally checked the Norton Critical Edition out from the library, and when we couldn't renew it any longer I picked up a used paperback that was another translation. My son felt he could really tell the difference, so he got this one for Christmas.
A+++++++++
good book
This is a great novel in a good translation. I highly recommend this scholarly edition of this classic of world literature.
