From the Inside Flap
It seems natural that a city sandwiched between two rivers would become one of the hottest food destinations in America. Philadelphia, perhaps best known for its famous sandwich—the Philly cheesesteak—is finally getting recognized for its restaurant scene, which is making “best of†lists and bringing home national awards. But with so many great choices, it can be hard for you to choose where to eat. If you’re hungry for a good meal and a delicious story, Unique Eats and Eateries of Philadelphia is here to serve you. It’s not a restaurant guide; instead, this book introduces you to the city’s most fascinating restaurants and chefs. Discover how two chocolatiers got engaged; learn about dinners interrupted by a bungled mob hits; restaurants that survived an earthquake, a fire, and even Prohibition; a secret restaurant that began in a backyard tent; a water ice stand that started in a garage; and a vodka distiller who bottled spirits in his parents’ basement. The book includes the inside scoop on more than 90 of Philadelphia’s upscale restaurants, BYOBs, ethnic restaurants, and fast casuals, as well as bars, bakeries and breweries - any place with a moving story and good food or drink. For sweet & spicy stories plus tips on how to get reservations at Philadelphia’s trendiest restaurants and get into secret speakeasies, find the most sinful desserts, see senior citizens dining with college seniors, taste grilled goat, spot celebrities and order vegan cuisine that’s kosher, too, let Unique Eats & Eateries of Philadelphia be your dining companion.

Enjoyed this book I still look through it for ideas
Last year I discovered the book “100 Things to Do in Philadelphia Before You Die†by former PR person (25 years) Irene Levy Baker. I liked it, though I knew much of the info already.Baker has followed that up with this new book which I just love. In fact I sat down and read it cover to cover (212 pages) in one sitting. I’ve lived or worked in Philadelphia for over 40 years and thought I knew a lot about Philly restaurants. Yes, I’ve been to many of the more than 200 dining places or “storesâ€, but I still found myself placing post-it notes on many pages so I could go back and try them again.I’m not sure of the intended audience for this paperback book but I see two groups who should read it: 1) Anyone who has recently moved to Philadelphia or the surrounding communities (not all have location inside the city limits) and wants to know where to eat and 2) Anyone who lives in the area and is looking to learn the “history†behind some of the “legacy†businesses (like Nuts to You, Ralph’s Italian, and Mueller’s Candy). I learned lots of new things along the way.Be aware that there are no prices in the book. This makes sense when you realize prices change. But I do encourage you to check the websites of any places that interest you. Yes, Southwark restaurant is good and “moderate†in price but their sister restaurant Ambra will set you back at least $75 per person (plus wine and tip). I’m also pleased to say that thought the book went to press a few months ago I noticed no establishment included that has closed. No the book is not complete – how could it be? – and I saw a few favorites missing (Ralph’s South Philly is here; Villa di Roma isn’t) – but Baker did a good job of including the new chef-run places along with others. Yes, she includes both Pat’s and Genos under “cheesesteaks†because of their backstories, but she only casually mentions John’s Roast Pork (for cheesesteaks) when it wins culinary awards. (Has Pat’s or Gino’s every won one?).Under “soft pretzelsâ€, Baker lists the Philadelphia Pretzel Bakery on Washington Ave. (the source of street vendor in Center City) and Miller’s Hand-twist in Reading Terminal. She has avoided listing the Philly Soft Pretzel company – based in Philly and franchised nationally) even though they sell many more than the two listed. That’s fine with me, because they are IMHO not chewy enough.I did catch a few facts that I knew were incorrect but not major. Baker says the Moshulu was opened in 1974, had a fire (1989) and was “renamed: in 2002. Having had dinner on the ship on New Year’s Eve in 1974, I know it was always called the Moshulu. Another “oops†is the discussion of the Victor Café in South Philly. Baker refers to it as originally being a gramophone shop where RCA executives would gather to have expresso. This was 1918. In fact, it was the Victor Talking Machine company, which made Victor Records that was the reason for the name. RCA (or the Radio Corporation of America) made radios and did not merge with the VTM until 1930).But these are minor (though I wanted to clarify them) and, overall, Baker has served the Philly community well by compiling this book. I now have at least 25 places I want to seek out and try and, if you are a Philadelphian, I’m sure you’ll start your bucket list too after reading the book.I hope you found this review both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm“Anything Phonographicâ€
Whether or not you are planning a trip to the Philadelphia area, author Irene Levy Baker provides a wonderfully descriptive armchair tour of all of the business, bakeries, food emporiums, and markets that offer the traveler "unique eats and eateries" in the City of Brotherly Love. Did you know that America's oldest family-owned Italian restaurant still operates in Philly? Or that the oldest cooking store in the country is located on the city's southside? Or that nearby Kennett Square lays claim to being the Mushroom Capital of the World? The author provides an interesting two-page overview , complete with photos, of 90 places worth visiting in the greater Philadelphia area if you love good food and drink combined with history. There is a guide by neighborhood in the appendix so you can easily map out your own delicious food tour of one of America's oldest cities, rich in culinary history and trivia, and recognized as one of the most fascinating food cities in the USA. Use this book as an armchair guide or stuff it into your backpack when your travel itinerary brings you to the East Coast for an up close and personal tour of the city that made cheesesteaks and many other edible concoctions and confections famous!
