Really chilling accounts of the atrocities that occurred during the Bataan Death March, which was largely the result of poor planning and the brutality of numerous individual soldiers of the Japanese Army as I came to understand. Book contained photos and other passages from American GIs mentioning deaths by beheading, bayoneting, dehydration, and disease tho it was this passage I'll forever remember as one soldier put it ever so bluntly as to what it took to survive, "The ones that got out were the ones that hated. Love never kept anyone alive." Coming from a culture that at the time felt that any soldier who surrendered thus dishonored both his country and himself then perhaps it comes as no surprise that these men were treated as less than human in their eyes, but it still remains hard to justify many of their actions. A superb read that brought the horrors of war and all it's ugliness to the forefront.
This "book" is as thin as tissue paper, I would consider it a "pamphlet". Very little historic facts, mostly hearsay anecdotes.I had a fairly comprehensive knowledge of the Bataan Death March because I was fortunate to know and work with a survivor(of that ordeal) for a couple of years, back in the 60's. I learned nothing new from reading this little pamphlet. It was a waste of money and I DO NOT recommend anyone wasting money on this one.
The Bataan Death March is a difficult read because it details the experiences of actual survivors. This book attempts to explore the culture norms of two different societies. The allies believed that lives should never be wasted and that’s surrender was an honorable way to save lives. Whereas, the Japanese culture believed death was more honorable than to surrender. I highly recommend this short book to anyone who has no concept of how cultural differences can affect the lives of others. I will read other books from Charles River editors.
This is a gripping story of the men who endured the Bataan Death March. Yes it is pretty dark, but very, very compelling in its content. These were amazing, courageous, scared and resilient men who just kept going. What other choice did they have? This part of WWII recounting the war from the Pacific theatre is not told enough. Everyone seems to focus on Hitler and Germany, but there were many, many of our soldiers who fought equally bravely to win the war with Japan. This book honors those men and their story.
This was hard to read as the topic is sad, gross, and horrifying. Yet, it is important to remember what some people suffered and that war is not a pretty thing.
My dad with the 803rd Engineering Aviation Battalion(EAB) at Clark Field. Became a POW of the Japanese after the 9 April 1942 surrender. He was on the Death March. I read anything relating to Bataan and the Death March.
Very informative. If you have a relative who spent time in the camps and were part of the Bataan death march I heartily recommend that you watch this.
A rehash; no new ground here. There are better books about this essentially horrifying chapter in human history. That said, if it's your preferred area of interest, this one's okay. It's not particularly good, not particularly bad. At worst, ho-hum.
