This is an enormous book with hundreds of paintings excellently reproduced. There are many full page images. Those that are not are still quite large. There are many more images than text, which for me is how a book of art should be. Each chapter has several pages of introduction followed by many pages of images. The book notes that particular attention is given to the most splendid years of the High Renaissance. This is a gorgeous compilation of art on public display at the Vatican. The Provenance and history of each selected piece is written in layman's language. The color plates are clear and precise. I especially appreciate the close-up detail views. Works that can only be admired from a distance are now accessible. For example, 49 pages are devoted to the Sistine Chapel. This is an excellent addition to the library of any lover of art and of the Church.

Almost every page of this 605 page book has wonderful pictures of ALL OF THE PAINTINGS OF THE VATICAN, plus a description of each and sometimes a story about the painting. Every page and picture is TOP QUALITY, with great life-like color, and gives the viewer and endless supply of looking into the worlds greatest paintings of all time.Well worth the money, and a book that will be passed down to my future generations to come.This book is beyond word description. This book is great. We visited the Vatican this summer and there were so many beautiful paintings but we felt that we did not have time to look at them all closely. I wanted to get a book that showed the paintings and gave some detail behind them - this book fit the bill. First, the book is huge! When I got it, I could not believe it cost so little but was so big and heavy. Every painting is included in it and the pictures are beautiful and big. I would have loved a bit more commentary but overall it is an amazing book.
This is the kind of book you can offer to any delicate person (such as your mother in law). Be sure she will say nice things about you after this. The book is the archetype for coffee table book. It will inspire you to go and visit Vatican palace and churches. You will appreciate so much to "read" (mainly pictures) it if you visited the place itself. Buy this book if you plan to visit Roma; don't bring the book with you (HEAVY). Read it in bed when you come back and try to recover from jet lag.
The paintings in this book are incredible. The collection ranges from the years 1000 to the mid 1800s and includes words from Daddi to Michelangelo and Raphael to Crosato. Oils, Frescos and incredible color! I have enjoyed reading this as much as looking at the beautiful artwork.
