I really love this series. I've been with it since the beginning and check in weekly. I re-read it in its entirety every few months. I bought this book to support the author and to enjoy it in a physical form. It, unfortunately, really only satisfies the first. It's a small, small book for such expansive art. The artist tends to use thick lines and a very illustrative style, so really engaging set-pieces are reduced to dense scribbles in a print version this small.I'm not disappointed by my purchase - it's important to support art you love and artists you admire - but I would have gladly paid double for a larger printing. It's probably too much to ask of a small indie artist like this for a re-release, or an omnibus version is when it is all over, but if it ever comes to pass I really hope he'd jump for a much larger print size.I hate to rate this three stars. Kill Six Billion Demons is so, so great. The printing of this book just absolutely does not stand up next to its content. A real shame.
I have to agree with the reviewer (John) who said this is a "It's a small, small book for such expansive art." I've included a photo with this review that compares the size of a page of this webcomic on my monitor versus the much smaller size of the book.I found this comic online and read it all the way through twice before supporting the artist by buying the book. I'm glad I did buy it for that reason -- but if I re-read it, which I probably will, I'll be re-reading it online rather than in this print form. I've got several graphic novels by Image Comics and this is one of the smallest books of theirs I've ever seen. I can't understand it. This book is Six-and-a-half inches by almost nine-inches tall. Meanwhile Image Comic's publication of webcomic "Skullkickers: Treasure Trove" is Seven-and-half inches by just over eleven inches -- and that's for a book with much less detail, both in the writing and the art. I own over 200 graphic novels and this is nearly the smallest of all of them. The art is brilliant, highly-detailed, and really deserves to be seen large. There are interesting philosophical and metaphysical arguments happening throughout, as well as action and adventure in this multi-versal, multi-ethnic setting (which happily reminds me of D&D's Planescape setting without being derivative). I wish I could separate out my stars for the writing and art (both a strong 4.25 stars) and the publication (wavering between two stars and three). I will say the colors are still vibrant in the published version, and the writing is legible -- but it is crazy small. That's really disappointing for a series of this quality.I'm really torn about this print copy here. Tom Parkinson-Morgan deserves to be respected and to be supported. It's true that we can become a patreon of his as well. But in the end I have to recommend buying the book from Image Comics purely in the hopes that a good sales run might encourage the publishing house to put out a larger version of the book.
So you're looking up Kill Six Billion Demons (ksbd) and considering picking it up, either you're familiar with the story or it was recommended to you and I hope this review can cover both circumstances. The first thing you should know is ksbd is a web comic and is currently still being written. You can support it on Pateron and probably should if you are a fan because the creator does amazing work, but this isn't about the web comic, this is about the print comic.I picked up ksbd because I wanted to get other people into it and the web comic is a little harder to follow. The whole series starts out by thrusting you in with no explanation. You learn along with the lead which is a common tactic in story telling (and one of my favorites), but because of how bizarre things are, it can still be hard to follow. Many people compare this series to Prophet, another comic with a very wild premise and a world much unlike our own, but there is a key difference: While ksbd is hard to follow and wild in premise, things start to make sense and rather than ever expanding the universe, things begin to fit together (this never happens in prophet). Unfortunately this is mostly true for the web comic, the print version so far is only one edition and ends before things start making more sense. There are some difference between the print version and the web version. Because the web version plays a fair bit with size of page and so on, the print version will sometimes edit content down. Nothing big or story changing, but there is definitely a little more content on the web. If you did read this and loved it you might want to consider going back to the web version, in fact you absolutely should because the web version contains companion stories of the myth and history which are largely absent from the print version. Actually to make things worse, the print version contains some of these stories too, but they're -different- from the ones in the web version. So should you buy this? It really depends. I'm a big fan of supporting the author and Pateron is one way to do it, plus the web comic is otherwise free. However there is a small bit of content in this the web comic doesn't have and it is fun to hold the physical version. However there is only the one volume and a lot more on the web, also I do not know if there are plans to publish more.Bottom line, if you want to get into the comic or try it out, this is a decent way if the web version is too overwhelming for you. If you're sure you're going to read this anyway you might consider doing the web version, or if you're a completion (like me) you could do both.
This is a very, very weird story. I had to read this through a couple of times. The first was mostly reading the little bit of text and figuring out what was going on, the second was really looking at each frame, some have little going on, but many of them are so packed with details that if you rush on by you'll miss things, some important. I really hope a second volume comes out soon as now that I get the world in the story and backstory, it's a really weird place, but a story with great potential. The world in this book could have billions (maybe six) stories to tell. I really want to know more about a couple characters, one who appears near the end, and a mysterious character who has been in the background most of the book.
