Back in the day I only read the first issue of this heroine. Now I know why. Bland villains, poor characterization and just a go nowhere storyline is why. I actually regret that I purchased this on my Kindle.

This is a fantastic Book!! In his forward Authur, Gerry Conway seems to think that he did a poor job in writing a female character. While I am not a Woman I can say that I felt that The portrayal of Carol Danvers was that of a normal human being, thrust into supernormal experiences. Carol struggled to balance work and a personal life and in the beginning of the story she battles with her own subconscious and inner demons. I felt that Carol was and every woman or every man she just seemed like a regular real life person. Her father does not respect her and his belief systems mirror that of Many men in the midst Women's liberation movement. Carol's father is not a bad person he is just a man who is living out of time trying to hold on to the Past and a caste system that is crumbling below his fingertips. This collection is so perfect Carol Danvers is lost at the opening of this book a woman not in touch with her entire being who goes on a journey of self-discovery and in the last panel of the book she claims herself her Womanhood her superpowers and becomes a strong individual. I disagree with Gerry I think this is one of the most successful protrails of a minority in Marvel Comics. Over the years I've struggled with the Power Man and some of the jive talk which sounded like the Marvel Bullpen through open the window 40 stories up in Manhattan and just listened out on the street and wrote down random words they heard. But I really feel this book captures and honesty and a truly fantastic Marvel Comic character. Carol Danvers is one of my favorite Marvel Comic characters she always has been and often I've seen her misused mishandled mistreated and abused by characters within the Marvel Universe and authors who don't understand Carol. She's a mix between Captain America, Spider-Man, with a touch of Nick Fury thrown in for fun but all in all Carol Danvers is her own person she's a gleaming star in the Marvel comic universe and one of my favorite superheroes. This book is a treasure it captures the essence of the character and she goes on a fantastic hero's journey throughout! It's fun the artwork is luscious in the beautiful 70’s Style and so far this is my favorite of the Marvel Masterworks it just felt like a complete book.

I like this more based on the strength of the character work than the superheroics. The villains Carol does battlE with are the very definition of mediocre, other than the scorpion I can not remember any of their names. I found Carol to be the main draw, and astoundingly s good idea as Roberts kind of person she is throughout the volume as she goes about building a life and career st the daily bugle, ,only to have it almost taken away by her double life. It was also interesting to see how folks like j Jonah Jameson and carols dad react to both Carol and me marvel, discomfort and disdain for a female hero. It definitely shows why a character like Carol was necessary. The art wasn't bad or great, it's fairly standard for native seen of the period.

I'm a huge Carol Danvers fan, so if you want to read back to her origin you need to pick up the classic Captain Marvel issues and then this two volume set. I originally read these in the old black & white essentials edition, so the full color was a real nice addition this time through. Also a big Chris Claremont fan and this work was probably right before his big run on Giant Size X-Men #1 started.Only wish I had picked this up in the Masterworks Hardcover edition, but it was sold out so I had to settle for the digital kindle edition.

At that age Mr Claremont, Jerry Conway, the Buscema bros (and Mr Sinnott, I think), were spinning-out stories with previously unknown female protege and, of course with all the the cool esoteric behind Carols identity, I had a a grade-a, 7th grade crush on her. Ms Marvel was a top-notch investigator, but still feminine.

I think this series has been unfairly dismissed for a few reasons. One is that Ms. Marvel was Marvel's (the publisher) first attempt at doing a distaff version of one of the their male heroes. The second reason is that comparatively, the stories aren't as compelling as what the writer, Chris Claremont, was doing in other places, e.g., X-Men and Marvel Team-Up. Still, there are interesting aspects of this series beginning with the Ms.Marvel/Carol Danvers personality split. Another is her evolving powers which initially are built into her outfit, but eventually become internal. Carol's jobs as editor of the new "Woman" magazine add an interesting element as well. One of the more inspired ideas was to have A.I.M. based in sub-basement of Alden's Department Store. Visually, the book is on par with other Marvel B-list titles of that era. Joe Sinnott's inks maintain consistency between the first three John Buscema-drawn issues and the Jim Mooney issues that follow. Guest artists Keith Pollard, Sal Buscema and Carmine Infantino (with Steve Leiloha inking) all contribute solid work. Most of the new characters introduced don't endure with the exception of Deathbird -- who would find greater fame/infamy in the pages of X-Men in the 80s and 90s.

I loved the first Ms. Marvel series and it was great until we got to Carmine Infantino art and then I had to stop. I'm sorry but his art is terrible. everyone looks like they are leaning back or about to fall. Great classic stories though.

The origins and first adventures of Ms. Marvel Carol Danvers.. interesting to look back at the present Captain Marvel's initial forays as a superhero..

I love this series!!
